Ontario Reign: Three Stars of the Week 10/19-10/25

The Ontario Reign played three games last week, going 2-1-0-0. The Reign started the week with a home win over the Calgary Wranglers before splitting two road games against the Texas Stars. In the win over Calgary, the Reign trailed 2-1 entering the final frame before pulling off a 3-2 comeback.

Three days later in Cedar Park against the Texas Stars, the Reign led 3-1 past the halfway mark, then lost the lead and regained it for a 5-3 victory. Seeking their first road sweep of the Stars since 2016, the hosts bounced back with a four-goal third period, and the Reign settled for a weekend split.

The Reign sit in 5th place in the division with 10 points, one point behind first, with a 5-3-0-0 record and a -4 goal differential. Now that the week has been recapped, here are my Reign three stars of the week.

Third star

Carter George

STATS: One game, 1-0-0 record, two goals against, 24 saves on 26 shots faced, .923 sv%

Carter George is the third star of the week despite appearing in one game. The Reign are currently doing a goalie rotation, so with three games on the schedule, all three goalies got one start. George started against the Wranglers and helped backstop the Reign in a 3-2 comeback win with 24 saves. George is 2-0-0 with a .907 sv% to start the season.

Second star

Cole Guttman

STATS: Three games played, one goal, five assists, six points, +2 rating, eight shots on goal

Cole Guttman is the second star of the week with six points in three games. Guttman started the week with a power-play goal and an assist in the win over the Wranglers. He followed that up with two helpers in back-to-back games against the Stars. He also reached the 200 career pro points milestone in the 5-3 win over Texas. Guttman is one of the best, if not the best, skaters on this Reign team, able to create for himself and others. His speed, shiftiness, passing, and shot make him a threat when he is on the ice in the offensive zone or in transition. He is second on the team in points (9) through eight games.

First star

Martin Chromiak

STATS: Three games played, four goals, two assists, six points, +2 rating, 13 shots on goal

This one was a no-brainer. Martin Chromiak is the first star of the week for back-to-back two-goal, one-assist performances in both Reign wins. Chromiak highlighted the week by propelling the Reign to a comeback win over the Wranglers with two third-period goals, including the game-winner with 2:50 to go in regulation. Chromiak followed that up with two more late third-period tallies in a 5-3 win over the Stars. All of Chromiak’s goals came in the third period and his play earned him the AHL Player of the Week award. Chromiak leads the team in goals (6) and ranks third in points (8) in eight games.
