LA Kings Training Camp Preview: Cole Guttman

With training camp just around the corner, we are previewing each player on the LA Kings roster. Up next: Cole Guttman!

*NOTE: Starting August 23rd, my Mom picked the order of the training camp player previews for the Reign players because I couldn’t figure out what order to do them in. So, I asked for her assistance. Today, she chose Cole Guttman!

2025-26 season

After three professional seasons in the Chicago Blackhawks organization, Cole Guttman returned home, signing a two-year NHL contract with the Kings. Guttman, 27, is a former Junior King, and the opportunity to play in the organization he grew up watching, playing in front of family and friends, and practicing at the facility during his playing days as a Junior King, I’m sure, was an opportunity he didn’t want to pass up.

Now to his season.

Guttman got off to a slow start, but you could see the skill he possessed. A crafty and shifty forward with a good shot. Although he didn’t have the points to show for it, I thought Guttman was a solid player, and when he took the ice, you couldn’t help but expect him to make something out of nothing on transition plays or in the offensive zone.

Once the points started to reflect his play, the floodgates opened. From November 8th to December 13th (13 games), Guttman scored 13 points (4 G, 9 A). After going scoreless for two games and serving a two-game suspension, Guttman carried the Reign offensively on most nights, tallying 16 points (10 G, 6 A) in 12 games. Often streaky, Guttman was a huge factor in the Reign offense, finishing third on the team in goals (24) and assists (29) and second in points (53). He tallied one goal in five playoff games.

2026-27 outlook

Guttman is entering the final year of his two-year pact and is a lock to join the Reign again. He’ll have to clear waivers, which I don’t see as a problem given that most teams will shy away from his small stature despite his AHL scoring touch.

He played center and wing last year, but I prefer him on the wing because it means less defensive responsibility. Guttman needs the puck on his stick, and I can see him playing on the top line again this year. He should play a key role at 5v5 and on the power play again this season. I predict he will finish inside the top five in goals and points on the Reign this season.
