Season review

After an impressive rookie season in the AHL, Angus Booth looked to take a big step in his sophomore campaign. The young blueliner saw his season debut delayed with an injury in training camp, forcing him to miss Ontario’s first six games. He returned to the lineup for two games, but it was clear he wasn’t quite right yet; he sat out the following four games.

Following those two separate stints, Booth became a mainstay in Ontario’s lineup by playing top-four minutes again and would form a strong pairing on the backend with first-year North American pro Kirill Kirsanov, and played steady penalty kill minutes.

On March 2nd, Booth made his NHL debut along with Kenny Connors and Jared Wright — three members of the Kings’ 2022 draft class — and scored a goal in a 5-2 LA Kings loss to the Colorado Avalanche. Booth would be assigned back to Ontario and stay there for the remainder of the regular season and playoff push.

He finished the season with 18 points in 61 games with the Reign and one goal in one game with the Kings.

Booth is a prospect who has quietly flown under the radar over the last year. As a left-handed defenseman, he’s not going to light up the stat sheet with points, but he can skate, transport the puck up the ice, and play on his off side. I do believe there is room to get stronger for him to crack a roster spot with the Kings.

However, there is an issue there: Brian Dumoulin and Joel Edmundson occupy two spots on the left side, blocking Booth from making the Kings. If the organization believes he’s ready to make the jump, then they will have to look to trade one of those two.
