Season review
We talked about Kenny Connors having a terrific rookie season in our recent Reign player reviews, but Jared Wright had a splendid rookie campaign himself. Wright, another first-year pro out of college, served as a great contributor in Ontario’s bottom six, playing alongside Connors and Andre Lee for a good portion of the first half of the season.

Wright’s speed proved to be a valuable asset on the forecheck and on the penalty kill. One area that impressed me with Wright was his ability not to commit penalties (he recorded three minor infractions all season).
Knowing he was a defense-first forward and not one to rack up the points in his three years at Denver University, I thought a projection of 10-12 goals and 20-25 points would be fair expectations for a sixth-round pick entering his rookie season. Well, I was wrong — in fact, I was way off – as Wright totaled 30 points (17 G, 13 A) in 54 games with the Reign. His 17 goals and his +27 rating were first among Reign rookie skaters.
As the Kings were ravaged by injuries late in the season, Wright got his first taste of NHL action. Wright played in 23 games for the Kings and tallied four assists, and also suited up for all four of the team’s playoff games. It was an experience that was kind of an eye-opener on how the game is played and that the players are stronger at the NHL level, as the 23-year-old mentioned in his exit interview.
The organization is extremely high on Wright, and he could battle for a roster spot in training camp. Although his shot improved in the AHL, he’ll need to continue working on it to be a mainstay in the lineup at the NHL level.
