Season review

Cole Guttman saw time at center to start the year, but eventually transitioned to the wing. Guttman’s first year in a Reign uniform was a big success as he finished the season third on the team in goals and second in points. What made the year special for the former Junior King was the ability to play in the organization he grew up cheering for and in front of friends and family.

Signed on the second day of free agency by the LA Kings after four years with the Chicago Blackhawks and their AHL affiliate, the Rockford IceHogs, Guttman was the perfect player to slide into the top six of Ontario’s lineup. Often a streaky player, when Guttman was on fire, he could carry the lineup and take over a game at any given moment with his shiftiness, speed, shot, and playmaking ability. In December, the 27-year-old had an eight-game point streak and another stretch at the end of the month, bleeding into early January, where he recorded points in 10 of 12 games.

His 24 goals marked a new AHL high for him in his four years in the AHL. He recorded one goal in five playoff games against the Firebirds, a series which the Reign lost in double overtime. His most notable game came when he recorded a hat trick and an assist in an Ontario 7-0 win over the Cocahella Valley Firebirds on April 1st.
