LA Kings: Five Prospects Set to Play in the OHL and WHL Playoffs

It’s that time of the year! The LA Kings are wrapping up their season and gearing up for what they hope is a long playoff run, but that’s not the story. Today features prospects in the Canadian Hockey League (CHL). As a reminder, the CHL is branched out into three leagues: the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), Western Hockey League (WHL), and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL).

LA will have five prospects compete in the playoffs in their respective junior leagues. Let’s look at which Kings prospects will be competing in the playoffs, and, possibly, the Memorial Cup.

WHL

Koehn Ziemmer (winger)

Team: Prince George Cougars

Stats: 61 games, 37 goals, 34 assists, 71 points, +11 rating

It’s the last playoff ride for Koehn Zimmer in Prince George. After this season, Ziemmer will make his way to the professional rankings, presumably in Ontario with the Reign. Ziemmer accumulated 71 points in 61 games for the Cougars and scored the overtime winner in his final regular-season game to end the regular season. Prince George is the fourth seed and will take on the fifth-seed Portland Winterhawks.

Portland eliminated Prince George last year in six games in the Western Conference Finals. Ziemmer had five points in that series, which included a two-goal game in game five to help the Cougars stave off elimination. Now, the Cougars will look for their revenge as they look to go on a long playoff run. Ziemmer has played on the second line for most of the season, but has recently moved up to the top line with Riley Heidt. Game one is on Friday.

OHL

Matthew Mania (right-handed defenseman)

Team: Flint Firebirds

Stats: 66 games, 7 goals, 38 assists, 45 points, +10 rating

Matthew Mania and the Flint Firebirds are the sixth seed and will take on the third-seed Kitchener Rangers in the opening round of the OHL playoffs. Mania has played on the top defensive pairing for Flint and has played in every situation for the team. Flint will be taking on a Kitchener team that amassed the second-most points in the Western Conference (reminder: the two division winners take the top two seeds in the conference). Game one is on Friday.

Jared Woolley (left-handed defenseman)

Team: London Knights

Stats: 68 games, 9 goals, 19 assists, 28 points +49 rating

Dominant. Powerhouse. The team to beat. Those are the best ways to describe the London Knights. Jared Woolley has played a big part in the team’s success. He’s a big, physical defenseman who has good skating and agility. His +49 rating was the third-best in the league while playing top-four minutes on the backend for London. His strong camp in LA and season with London saw him get rewarded yesterday with an entry-level contract. Look for Woolley to play on the second defensive pair in the playoffs. Game one for London’s series will be on Friday against the Owen Sound Attack.

Liam Greentree (winger)

Team: Windsor Spitfires

Stats: 64 games, 49 goals, 70 assists, 119 points, +55 rating

The prospect everyone loves. Liam Greentree is eligible to return to Windsor’s lineup after serving a two-game suspension to close out the regular season. The suspension robbed Greentree of a possible 50-goal and 120-point season. Now that the captain of the Spitfires is back in the lineup, he’ll look to carry over his regular-season dominance in Windsor’s first-round matchup against the Soo Greyhounds.

Windsor missed the playoffs last year as they finished dead last in the Western Conference. This year, they took their division and finished as the second-seed, behind the Knights in the conference. Game one of their series starts today at 4 PM PST in what Windsor hopes will be the start of a long playoff run.

Carter George (goalie)

Team: Owen Sound Attack

Stats: 47 games, 17-22-6 record, 3.35 GAA, .909 sv%, 0 shutouts

Don’t let the stats fool you. Carter George is a damn good goalie and willed the Owen Sound Attack into the playoffs as the eighth seed in the Western Conference. He was the MVP of an abysmal Attack team that many people didn’t expect to make the playoffs. Now, they are massive underdogs in their series against London.

With George (Owen Sound) and Woolley (London) on opposite sides of this series, one Kings prospect will have their season cut short at the hands of the other’s team. Can George steal a few games and lead Owen Sound to a big upset over the powerhouse that London is?
