Ontario Reign: Samuel Fagemo Participates in Three Events in the AHL All-Star Skills Competition

AHL all-star weekend is here, and the festivities have begun. The Ontario Reign has one player representing them: Samuel Fagemo.

There were seven events in the all-star skills competition (with the results), and Fagemo participated in three of the events.

  • Event #1: Inglasco Puck Control Relay (West won 3-1)
  • Event #2: CCM Fastest Skater (Tied 1-1)
  • Event #3: Fortune Tires Rapid Fire (East won 1-0)
  • Event #4: CCM’s Hardest Shot (Tied 1-1)
  • Event #5: Silvercrest Accuracy Shooting (East won 2-0)
  • Event #6: Silvercrest Pass and Score (East won 7-3)
  • Event #7: Upper Deck Breakaway Relay (East Won 6-5)

CCM’s Hardest Shot event

Reign fans remember this event all too well. Martin Frk, a member of the Reign at the time, set the record for 109.2 MPH in this event, which was ironically held in Ontario. Reign and AHL fans saw history on the Reign’s home ice.

Each player gets two attempts, and the hardest shot of the two will be recorded as their best. The player with the hardest shot gives his team a point, and the team with the highest average speed overall will also receive a point.

This was the first event Fagemo took part in. Fagemo had two shot attempts that registered at 98.0 and 95.2 MPH. 98.0 MPH was the hardest shot of the two, so that was labeled as his best. Fagemo’s shot came in third behind Trevor Carrick’s 100.9 MPH (Charlotte Checkers) and Andrew Poturalski’s (San Jose Barracuda) 98.3 MPH.

Carrick’s shot was the winner, giving the Eastern Conference a point. However, the Western Conference had the highest team average speed on their shot attempts combined, giving them a point.

To this day, Martin Frk’s 109.2 MPH shot is still the record (AHL and NHL).

Silvercrest Accuracy Shooting event

This was the second event Fagemo took part in. Brandt Clarke represented the Reign in this event last year and was a perfect 4-for-4, helping the Western Conference win this challenge. This year it was Fagemo’s turn. The 24-year-old didn’t go perfect like Clarke but went 50% (4-for-8) in his eight attempts. He had the best accuracy percentage of the West, but the East took him both points (The player with the most hits in the fewest attempts and the team with the most hits total).

Upper Deck Breakaway Relay event

This was the final event of the evening. The goal is to score on the opposing goalie. Each team has four groups of five players, and the team that scores the most goals wins, and the amount of goals they score is the number of points they receive. Fagemo didn’t score on his attempt and the East scored six goals to the West’s five. Therefore, the East got six points, and the West got five.

In the end, the East won the skills competition event by a score of 19-13. The 3-on-3 all-star challenge will be tomorrow, starting at 6 PM PST with the North Division taking on the Pacific first. You can catch it on FloHockey.
