Here are the four takeaways from Monday’s matinee victory:

Aidan Dudas gets his 10th of the season

Aidan Dudas has had a breakout season for the Ontario Reign. Just past the midway point of the second period and the Reign short-handed, the puck hopped over the defenseman Ryker Evans’ stick at the blue line. As the puck reached the neutral zone, Dudas got to it first and was in all alone on a breakaway. Dudas made a filthy move as he deeked Firebirds’ netminder Joey Daccord and slid the puck into the net while falling down in the crease for his 10th of the year.

The goal gave Dudas his second point of the game and 24th of the year, a new career-high for the 22-year-old. His 10th goal of the season also tied his career-high which he set last season.

Penalty kill comes up big

In the second period, the Reign found themselves short-handed four times including a 5-on-3 that last lasted for 42 seconds. Cal Petersen and the penalty kill came up big killing off all four penalties during the middle frame. They even scored a goal while short-handed. The Firebirds have the 12th-ranked power play, so they have players that can put the puck in the net. For the Reign to kill off all four power plays and even score a short-handed goal was a huge momentum swing as things could have gotten ugly for Ontario there.

Cal Petersen comes up huge

Cal Petersen had himself a phenomenal game. While he gave up two goals, you can’t fault him much because both were turnovers on clearing attempts by Helge Grans and Jacob Moverare. However, Petersen had to come up big in the third period and overtime as the Firebirds outshot the Reign 18-8 combined in both frames. Petersen’s best save of the afternoon came in overtime with just under three minutes as he made a desperate sprawling save on the Firebirds’ leading goal-scorer, Jesper Froden.

The game would head to a shootout and Petersen stopped three of the four shots he faced (the other hit the post). There was no overcommitting on shots in the shootout as Petersen was squared to the shooters and looked calm in the net. The Reign were once again outshot in a game and needed every save, especially in the final 15 minutes from Petersen. Big game by him yesterday.

Samuel Fagemo plays hero again

Samuel Fagemo is starting to become Marco Sturm’s secret weapon in these shootouts. In the last two games the Reign have gone to a shootout Samuel Fagemo was the hero in both. After both teams went scoreless through the first seven shooters, Sturm once again tabbed Fagemo as the 4th round shooter for the Reign. Fagemo went to the same move he did against the Henderson Silver Knights going glove side on the netminder to win the game for the Ontario Reign.

Fagemo has now played hero three times in less than two weeks for the Reign when they’ve gone to the shootout.

UP NEXT: These two teams will be back at it again for the rematch in Ontario Wednesday night. The game starts at 7 pm PT and can be seen on AHLTV.
