LA Kings at Dallas Stars projected lineup, betting preview

Fresh off a dominating 5-1 win in St. Louis on Monday, the LA Kings are right back at it on Tuesday in Dallas against the Stars.

Projected Lineups

LA Kings (6-5)

Here’s how the Kings skated against the Blues:

It was another strong performance from the new-look lines, so I can’t say I’d be expecting any changes. Though, it’s worth keeping an eye on Quinton Byfield, who missed the last two games due to an illness, and Brandt Clarke, who has been a healthy scratch the past two games. Both are possibilities to draw back in.

One change I would expect is Cal Petersen to get the nod in goal. He was good against Toronto on Saturday, and with Jonathan Quick getting the first leg of the back-to-back on Monday, Petersen should go on Tuesday.

Dallas Stars (5-3-1)

Here’s how the hosts skated during Monday’s practice:

After missing a bulk of training camp before signing a four-year, $7.75 million AAV contract, Jason Robertson is proving his worth. The 23-year-old has four goals and ten points in nine games. Roope Hintz continues to be one of the more underrated players in the NHL; he’s also producing at a point-per-game (3G, 6A in nine games). Off-season acquisition Mason Marchment is chipping in as well, with seven points in nine games.

19-year-old Wyatt Johnson, the 23rd overall pick in the 2021 NHL draft, has been told he is staying in the NHL. He has picked up four points in nine games.

The big story in Dallas, however, is the status of goaltender Jake Oettinger. The 23-year-old netminder left the Stars’ last game early with a lower-body injury, and he will be out for at least a week. Scott Wedgewood should get the crease on Tuesday.

5-on-5

Here’s how the two teams match up at 5-on-5 per Natural Stat Trick

Team GP CF% GF GA xGF% SCF% HDCF% SH% SV% PDO
Los Angeles Kings 11 52.3 27 26 51.5 51.5 51.2 10.1 .891 0.992
Dallas Stars 9 48.6 18 12 51.2 52.1 52.9 9.4 .934 1.033

Though still playing in some high-scoring affairs, it’s been better of late overall for the Kings. They’ve had two good goaltending games in a row, and with the depth that their offense is showing, particularly with the move of Kevin Fiala down the lineup, thr 5-on-5 play has been better. From a possession standpoint, it’s two pretty evenly-matched teams through the first three weeks of the season.

Special Teams

Both LA and Dallas have power plays that are clicking at exactly 20% – deadlocking them in 19th place. Though, the Kings have played in many more penalty-filled games, drawing 50 power plays compared to the Stars’ 30.

The Dallas penalty kill is among the best in the league, killing off 85.7% of their opponent’s power plays. Los Angeles is middle of the pack, coming in at 15th place with a 79.6 kill rate.

Back to the Gabriel Vilardi well? Back to the Gabriel Vilardi well. Yes, he scored again in St. Louis. Yes, we’re looking at those odds yet again. The red-hot winger is +220 to score in Dallas. Also, Phillip Danault is quietly putting up greater than a half-a-point-per-game pace with six points in 11 games. He is anchoring a second line that is playing much better of late. The former Montreal Canadien is +105 to tally a point.

The Arcadia, CA-native, Jason Robertson, has goals in back-to-back games. He is +130 to make it three in a row. And why not throw in a Hockey Royalty favorite, Mason Marchment? He is +250 to score and Even money to record a point.

Lastly, former rival Joe Pavelski has made a living tipping pucks in from the top of the crease, particularly on the power play. He is +275 to pick up a point with the man advantage on Tuesday.

Good luck, and enjoy the game!
