LA Kings: Anže Kopitar Officially Claims the Throne as Los Angeles’ All-time Points Leader

He finally did it! Anže Kopitar surpassed Marcel Dionne last night as the all-time leading scorer in LA Kings history, cementing himself as the King of Kings. Kopitar, a longtime cornerstone player for the Kings, officially stands alone at the top as the organization’s points leader, a record that Dionne held for over 45 years.

Entering the game, Kopitar trailed Dionne by one point on the franchise’s scoring list. By the end of the game, he claimed the throne with two power-play goals for career points 1,307 and 1,308 in a 6-4 loss to the New Jersey Devils.

The franchise’s point leader list features some of the best to wear the crown across their chest. That list features Dionne (1,307), Luc Robitaille (1,154), Dave Taylor (1,069), Wayne Gretzky (918), Bernie Nicholls (758), Dustin Brown (712), Drew Doughty (703), Butch Goring (659), and Rob Blake (494), all in the top ten. Kopitar has passed most of them throughout his career.

The captain of the Kings has set quite a few records during his 20-year career in Los Angeles, but this milestone is the biggest of them all. Dionne’s record of 1,307 points seemed unattainable, but Kopitar proved records are always meant to be broken with his consistent play. It’s only fitting that Kopitar stands alone in the record books at least a month before he hangs up his skates to cap off his illustrious 20-year career as a Hollywood ending.

From a small town in Slovenia, to the 11th overall pick in the 2005 Draft, scoring his first NHL goal against the Anaheim Ducks on October 6, 2006, winning two Stanley Cups and two Selke trophies, to now becoming the franchise’s leader in points, Kopitar is without a doubt the greatest LA King of all time.
