LA Kings Prospect Update – Week 2/19

Another week has passed, and it’s time for our weekly LA Kings prospect update. In the past, only one player is picked as the player who highlights the weekly prospect update. This week, I will break that unwritten rule as three players stood out during the week. All three of these players play the same position. Time to break down the players who highlighted this week’s prospect update!

Erik Portillo

Stat line: 3 GA, 59 saves on 62 shots faced, no shutouts, 1-0-1 record in two games played

First, we’ll start with Erik Portillo. Portillo started in two of the three games for the Ontario Reign and allowed only three goals against. Portillo is having a better rookie season than I anticipated and is improving day by day on his game. His best game of the week came in the Reign’s 3-2 victory over the San Diego Gulls last Saturday. It was the most dialed-in I’ve seen him look all season. When speaking with Reign goaltending coach Adam Brown briefly on Friday when the Reign took on the Coachella Valley Firebirds, I asked him about Portillo and the two areas he mentioned they were working on with him were his game reads and structure (put rebound control in this one). His .921 save percentage is third among qualified rookie goalies in the American Hockey League (AHL).

Hampton Slukynsky

Stat line: 2 GA, 39 saves on 41 shots faced, one shutout, 2-0-0 record in two games played

Now we’ll move over to Hampton Slukynsky. Slukynsky was selected with the Kings’ 118th overall pick last summer and has had a great season with the Fargo Force of the United States Hockey League (USHL), which is the top team in the league. Slukynsky’s style is a little different from Portillo’s. He’s got a calmness about him in the net and has good athleticism with his mobility in the crease. He won both of his starts last week and recorded his fourth shutout of the season. He currently leads all qualified and rookie goalies in wins (21), goals against average (1.80), save percentage (.918), and shutouts (4). It’ll be interesting to see how his development continues when he goes to the NCAA next year at Northern Michigan. His play earned him goalie of the week honors.

Jacob Ingham

Stat line: 3 GA, 69 saves on 72 shots faced, no shutouts, 2-0-0 record in three games played

Taylor Swift had the Eras Tour last year, but Jacob Ingham is having a tour of his own this year called the Revenge Tour. Entering this season, Ingham can in with something to prove after missing all of last year with back surgery. He has seen time in the AHL with the Reign and the Greenville Swamp Rabbits of the ECHL. Ingham looked solid in his brief stint with the Reign and has a .913 save percentage in 23 games in Greenville. He won both of the games he started last week (allowing two goals or less in both) and stopped all five shots on goal in relief in his third game of the week. Like Slukynsky, he also won goalie of the week.

  1. Maybe they should trade Rittich + Talbot + Dell for a 1st, to a contender , now that Arvidson, Mikey , and Kempe are all out.
The contender could keep Rittich and flip Talbot and Del for other picks to other teams that need a seasoned back up.
Call up Portillo for some NHL experience and Ingham.
Gotta trade Roy now to, and potentially Lizotte as sweetner.
Roy is not affordable with the Kings cap.
Lizotte is too small and therefore injury prone.
I doubt anyone would take Arvidson but depends on his injury and return time frame and that info could be shared.
Do all these injuries give Blake another year to make things right.
Probably because he is signed for it and before the injuries Hiller made him look smart for dumping MacLlelan.
