Here are the three takeaways from Saturday’s 4-3 overtime win:
Rocco Grimaldi continues to dominate the Reign
The San Diego Gulls don’t score a lot of goals as it’s been an issue for them these past two seasons. One player that does provide offense for them is Rocco Grimaldi. The 30-year-old veteran forward led the Gulls in goals and points entering last night’s contest. He added to both of those categories with a hat trick as he continues to dominate the Reign this year.
A better shot than when Luke Skywalker blew up the Death Star. @RGrimaldi23 tallies his hat trick goal and gives us the lead!#LetsGoGulls | #ONTvsSD pic.twitter.com/DwYu6Wa2qt

Grimaldi’s first two goals were off re-directions from a shot by Michael Del Zotto. His third goal was a wrist shot that went top-shelf through a screened Matthew Villalta. Grimaldi now has six goals and eight points in seven games against the Ontario Reign this year.
Just enough to win
This was probably not the best game of the season by the Ontario Reign. After Martin Chromiak’s goal in the first period, it was all Gulls from that point on. The Gulls outshot the Reign 14-3 in the second period and even had three power-play opportunities that the Reign killed off. With the reign trailing 3-2 with about seven minutes remaining in the game, they were being outshot 29-12. There wasn’t much juice from the offense.
With 3:28 left, TJ Tynan threw a puck to the net that was stopped as Lias Andersson crashed the net to put home the juicy rebound to tie the game at three. The Reign did enough late in the game to tie it and eventually win in overtime on a game they could have lost and got zero points. Matthew Villalta was big for the Reign in the second period as well.

Martin Chromiak wins it in OT
Martin Chromiak opened the scoring and finished it off in dramatic fashion. The first-year pro had a chance to win the game in overtime but got denied on a breakaway as he went five-hole on the backhand. Two minutes later he got a chance at redemption. This time he went glove side from the left circle to win the game for the Ontario Reign.
