Takeaways from the 3-1 loss:
Cal Petersen solid despite loss
It’s been a good start for Cal Petersen since his demotion to the AHL. It’s pretty much everything you’ve been asking for when looking for one of the Kings’ NHL goalies to find their way again with the Ontario Reign. Both goals Cal Petersen surrendered came shorthanded off of some pretty good shots from Silver Knights’ sticks.
It’s unknown exactly how long Petersen will stay in the AHL. The longer the better though. Finding confidence is hard to do and takes time. For the LA Kings, a continued stretch of quality starts for Cal will not only help his confidence but the fanbase’s confidence in the goaltending position going forward.
How long will Byfield stay in Ontario?
Quinton Byfield continues to rack up points during his extended stint with the Ontario Reign. What was originally thought of as a conditioning assignment, has turned into something more for the LA Kings’ second-overall pick. If the goal for Byfield playing in the AHL was to build confidence then 11 points in 11 games played is a good start.
The problem that consists for Quinton right now is the sudden crowd amongst the LA Kings forward group. With the surprising placement of Adrian Kempe back in the center position and Alex Iafallo‘s return to the lineup, a spot for QB is suddenly hard to find. Even though many pines for him to receive a call back to the NHL lineup, continued production and quality minutes might be the best thing for him and the organization.
