2021-22 Season

Matt Roy had a strong 2021-22 season. Playing 67 games, he scored two goals and assisted on 19 others for 21 points, with his assists and points being career highs. All things considered, he asserted himself as an all-around defenseman, blocking 103 shots and also having 124 hits. He set another career high, this time in TOI, averaging 21 minutes per game.

Roy prides himself as a defensive-defenseman, one who will do anything to get the win. He is not shy about the rough stuff either, often face washing the opposition who push him around. Roy is a second-pairing defenseman for the most part and can jump up and play solidly wherever he is placed.

Roy solidified himself as a key component to the Kings team as he plays a shutdown role capable of supplying some offense.

2022-23 Outlook

Look for Roy to have the same type of season. He will be steady on the blueline and contribute offense when necessary. Roy will get his 20 minutes a night of solid defense and protect the net at all costs. Roy, whose current contract runs out after the 2023-24 season, will supply the grit and physical play in the defensive zone.

His defensive partner could likely be another right-shot defenseman in Sean Walker or Sean Durzi. Roy is not flashy, just a diligent player, playing a vital role on the Kings. The 27-year-old is a key part of the transition game with smooth outlet passes.

As the Kings go from playoff eligible to Stanley Cup contenders, Roy will play a big role. Players like Roy are key to a long playoff run as the style of the game changes and suits his style more the longer the Kings remain in the playoffs.
