The LA Kings erased a two-goal deficit in the third period only to give up the game-winner late. Game 7 is on Saturday to decide the series.
Edmonton opened the scoring 1:40 into the game. Connor McDavid carried the puck into the Kings’ defensive zone, streaking around the net on a wraparound attempt that just got past Jonathan Quick. 1-0 lead just like that.
Continuing the early period trend, Evander Kane‘s re-direct of Brett Kulak‘s shot from the point 1:50 into the middle session found the back of the net to make it a 2-0 Oilers’ advantage. Quick initially stopped Kane on a 2-on-1 chance before the Oilers reset in the attacking zone.
Nearly three minutes later, it looked like Kane had potted his second goal of the night. However, the play was waved off for goaltender interference. Zach Hyman was tabbed for knocking Quick down.
With Edmonton controlling the pace of play for most of the game, the Kings finally had sustained pressure late in the second period, drawing a penalty. Sean Durzi wasted little time on the Kings’ third power-play opportunity of the night, firing a blast from the high slot through traffic that got past Mike Smith. The goal cut the Kings’ deficit to just one.
Durzi also became the first Kings player not named Phillip Danault to tally a power-play goal in this series, a unit that has converted on just 3-of-24 opportunities.
Twenty-nine seconds into the final frame, Matt Roy sent a beautiful saucer pass to Carl Grundstrom, who fired a wrister past Smith. The goal evened the score at two goals apiece.
The Oilers took the lead with 5:10 to go. Tyson Barrie‘s blast from the high slot marked his second career playoff goal.
With the net empty, this time, Kane got his second goal of the night, an empty-netter to seal it.
