Goalscorer. Sniper.

These are just a few terms you hear when describing Arthur Kaliyev. While those adjectives may be accurate, they don’t fully encapsulate the overall game he brings to the ice.

We know all about Kaliyev’s shot. His wrister rivals that of Maple Leafs’ superstar Auston Matthews. And his one-timer would make Alex Ovechkin smile. But if there’s one skill that’s often overlooked from Arty, it’s his passing ability.

Chris Peters Hockey Sense with Chris Peters

“Kaliyev’s path to the pros is with his elite shot that should allow him to become a consistent goal scorer at the NHL level. His offensive sense is outstanding, and his ability to find the net from any position is helpful. As a pro, he added more elements to his game off the puck and will have to continue doing that in order to carve out a more permanent role. But his size and strength give him an advantage against a lot of opponents as long as his effort follows. He’s an exciting talent.”

LA Kings

In his first pro year in the AHL, Arthur Kaliyev led the Ontario Reign in goals (14) and assists (17). A remarkable first season in the pros for a player drafted in the second round of the 2019 NHL draft.Coming into his first real training camp with the LA Kings, Kaliyev looked to build off that impressive AHL campaign. And show General Manager Rob Blake he was ready for the big club.

After a strong preseason, which included a hat trick on October 6th in Anaheim, Kaliyev has found himself on the opening night roster. For a team in such desperate need of goal scoring, it’s no surprise to see him crack the roster. If he continues his strong play, look for his name among the Calder Trophy candidates.
